Каждый вид спорта и каждая дисциплина включает по меньшей мере один вид соревнований. По определению, приведенному в Олимпийской хартии, «вид соревнований представляет собой состязания, завершающиеся распределением мест, вручением медалей и дипломов». Например, в шорт-треке, который является дисциплиной конькобежного спорта, забеги на 500, 1000, 1500 м и т.д. являются видами, включенными в программу соревнований по шорт-треку. (См. Each sport and discipline has at least one event. An event is defined in the Olympic Charter as a competition in a sport or in one of its disciplines, resulting in a ranking and giving rise to the award of medals and diplomas. For example in short track, which is a skating discipline, 500 m, 1,000 m, 1,500 m, etc. races are events conducted as part of the short track program. (See Olympic Charter Rule 46.2)

Бобслей представляет собой скоростной спуск с гор по специально оборудованным ледовым трассам на управляемых санях (бобах). В программу Олимпийских игр входят три вида соревнований: мужчины на двух- и четырехместных бобах, женщины на двухместных бобах. Олимпийские соревнования по бобслею в каждом виде программы проходят в два дня — по 2 заезда в день. Победительницей становится та команда, чье суммарное время (по всем 4 заездам) минимально. Если две команды финишировали с одинаковым временем, то они получают одинаковые награды.

Bobsleigh is a sport that involves high-speed mountain descent down specially equipped iced tracks on steerable sleds (bobs). Three events make up the Olympic bobsleigh program: men compete in two- and four-person competitions; women compete in two-person competitions. Olympic bobsleigh competition consists of four runs held over a two-day period, with two runs completed each day. Medals are awarded on the basis of total time over four runs, with the winner having the lowest overall time. If two teams complete the competition in a tie, they are awarded the same place.
